DOCUMENTARIES

Go There. See It Differently.

Some stories are better understood when you can see the people, places and circumstances for yourself. Peter’s documentary work creates space to look more closely — exploring real environments, lived experiences and the people whose perspectives can easily be overlooked.
THE CONTEXT

Every Film Begins With a Reason to Look Closer.

Peter’s documentary work begins with curiosity — a desire to understand the people, environments and circumstances behind a story.

North Carolina, USA

AT THE CENTRE OF THE STORY

Start With the People Who Live It.

Peter’s documentary work is grounded in curiosity about people — how they live, work, adapt, create and respond to the circumstances around them. Rather than treating people simply as examples of a larger issue, the films create space for their experiences and perspectives to become part of the story.

The People Behind the Story

A closer look at the people and communities whose experiences provide the human perspective at the heart of the documentary.

Lived Experience, Local Perspective

A closer look at the people whose knowledge, experience and perspective help reveal the story beyond the surface.

LIVED EXPERIENCE

The Camera Is Only Part of the Story.

Peter’s documentary work sits within a much broader history of working alongside people in different countries, cultures and challenging environments.

That experience influences what he notices, the questions he asks and the stories he chooses to follow.

The result is documentary work shaped not simply by observation from the outside, but by years spent working in environments where understanding local context matters.

PEOPLE & CRAFT

What We’re Making

What We’re Making explores people through what they make, build, preserve and pass on.
The series looks closely at skill, knowledge and creativity — particularly the kinds of experience that are often learned through doing rather than through formal instruction.

BEYOND THE FILM

Not Every Story Needs a Documentary.

Across decades of international work, Peter has accumulated experiences, photographs and stories that may never become full-length films.

Field Stories provides a home for those moments — connecting an image, a place or an experience with the lesson or perspective behind it.

WHY DOCUMENTARY

Understanding Starts With Paying Attention.

Documentary provides Peter with a different way to explore many of the questions that run throughout his work.
How do people respond to their environment?
What knowledge exists within communities that outsiders might overlook?
What can we learn when we stop assuming we already understand the situation?
And how does seeing the reality change the way we think about it?
Documentary doesn’t always need to provide the answer.
Sometimes its value is helping us look more carefully at the question.

THE WORLD AROUND US

People Are Only Part of the Story.

Peter’s interest in the world extends beyond organizations and communities to the environments surrounding them.
Travel, the ocean, wildlife, adventure and conservation provide another lens through which to explore the places he encounters.

THE CONNECTION

Seeing the World Changes How You Think About It.

The documentary work sits alongside Peter’s consulting, teaching, speaking and writing because each begins with a similar instinct:

Look more closely.

Understand the environment before deciding what it needs. Question assumptions. Listen to the people closest to the situation. And remain willing to discover that the reality is different from what you expected.
